Primary

Lovettsville Montessori School was started in 2006 with a small class of 3 - 6 year olds. It is a multi-age class based on the teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori.

The Montessori curriculum includes the areas of Language development, including vocabulary, early reading and writing. We also work with mathematics, science, geography, art, practical life exercises and music.

The classroom environment is specially prepared to allow each child the time and space to learn at his or her own pace.  The materials encourage a child to explore and experiment through manipulation, repetition and making choices throughout the day. The children choose the lessons they want to work on each day, with support from the Guide.

We have a lot of fun each day, exploring our classroom materials, learning to read, singing, playing together outside. We also have special days of hiking on Halloween, inviting our parents in for special visits to the classroom. We celebrate spring with a May Day celebration.

We have a wonderful and natural outdoor space that encourages children to explore nature, use their imaginations, negotiate games with their friends, get lots of exercise and continue the learning that happens indoors to the outdoor environment. We go out in all kinds of weather.

Elementary

The elementary program was started in 2015 when parents who had children in the Primary class loved it so much and wanted to extend their children's Montessori experience. We now have a lovely Elementary program for students 6 - 12 years old.

In the elementary class, the children receive lessons from the guide in the areas of language arts, mathematics, geography, history, art, science, biology. They have great freedom to follow their interests in their follow-up work. The children follow-up by reading and researching, writing reports/stories/plays, creating artwork, cooking/baking, etc. The children can plan “going-outs” to area destinations. They also regularly go to the grocery co-op (within walking distance) or craft/hardware store to purchase the materials they need to cook or make their projects. In the past, they have taken the MARC train to DC to the Museum of the American Indian or the Natural History Museum. Afterwards, they follow up by reading or writing about a subject they studied.

Once a week, the elementary students have PE, focusing on a different activity each month. They have played kickball and soccer and have hiked area trails. In the past, the children biked the C&O and swam at an aquatic center. These are great ways to get exercise, try a variety of activities and visit new and different locales.

Each day, the children prepare the classroom for the day, and then clean the classroom at the end of the day.

Summer

We have a short summer program, generally a few weeks long, each summer. This is a great time for the children to come together again and see their friends. We always play in the water on our inflatable water slide, sprinkler or slip n’ slide. We do a lot of art projects, play in the sand, eat lunch together and just enjoy having fun together.
