Frequently Asked Questions

1.
Do children need to be using the toilet independently?
We would like to see all children who are entering the primary class to be confidently wearing underwear. We understand that it is a process and that a child will need help at times and we are happy to help them as they work their way toward independently using the toilet. We ask that any primary child that is going to be enrolled for the afternoon, that the child is confidently using the toilet. We do not have the staff to help a child use the bathroom throughout the longer day.
2.
Do you have before school care? Or aftercare?
The full amount of time that we have at LMS is 8:15-4:00. We do not have care before 8:15 or after 4:00.
3.
Do children nap?
Generally, no. If you would like your primary child to nap, please pick them up at noon. Once they are able to handle a longer day, they are welcome to come until 2:30 or 4:00, if there is space.
4.
How is tuition paid?
Tuition is paid in ten equal installments, August to May. We use a tuition payment site called FACTS.
5.
Do you have a summer program?
Most years we have a very short summer program. It is often Monday - Thursday, 9:00 - 1:00 for a few weeks in July. This may change in the future, depending on staffing. A decision is made in the winter/early spring about the coming summer.
6.
Do you have year round school?
No, at present we follow a school year calendar, generally along the lines of Loudoun County Public Schools (late August to early June). We hope to add a year round option for the primary students in the future.
7.
Do you encourage parent involvement in the school?
Absolutely! We encourage parent involvement through conferences, observations, Montessori Mornings, where you visit the classroom and see it in action as you shadow your child, and community events, such as school hikes or the Holiday Sing-Along. The more parents can understand the experiences of the child in the classroom, the better able they are to offer a more consistent environment at home, which will help your child to become a lifelong learner.
8.
How do Montessori children adjust to public schools?
Children who have been in a Montessori environment are generally very flexible and adjust quite easily to the public school situation. They are generally strong students and spend their time in more productive ways because of their self direction and positive attitude toward learning.
9.
What about homework for the Elementary years?
Children are free to pursue special interests but are also expected to complete assignments from lessons given throughout the week. Their daily work is checked immediately in the classroom and individualized instruction is then provided. Sometimes additional practice in areas may be given at home after speaking with the student and parents if a target area needs additional support, or if a student is working to meet a deadline. However, students are encouraged to approach learning as much more than knowledge learned through books. Spending time with family at home and participating in other activities outside of school are also essential to the overall development of any child.
