Being Outdoors
Lovettsville Montessori School is blessed to be located in beautiful western Loudoun County, VA. We have access to a wonderful array of natural local destinations as well as our own property. Our outdoor environment includes a shady playground where the children love to run, play in the sand and to climb trees. The elementary students take their books, musical instruments, writing supplies or Montessori materials outside to a grassy spot or the “Tree House”, our outdoor classroom. The Tree House has tables and chairs, a small hammock swing and branches in which the children like to sit and read. They also love to eat lunch there.
"In nature, a child finds freedom, fantasy, and privacy: a place distant from the adult world, a separate peace."
- Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder
The children go outside in all kinds of weather for walks around the neighborhood, or playing on the playground. The elementary community also goes out and about for their field trips and other goings-out. This might include hiking on the Appalachian Trail, biking on the C&O, or walking to the local park in Lovettsville to play soccer or kickball. The elementary students also have gone tubing on the Potomac River to kick off the school year in September.
The elementary students have also gone on camping trips to the Shenandoah National Park.
One of our values at LMS is to find a lifelong appreciation and love of the outdoors, care for the environment and education about the animals and plants who live in our world.
